Branding, like marketing, is a term that’s thrown around a lot. Both can mean multiple things. When we talk about branding, or your brand to be more specific, we are talking about everything that is you and your brand. You are a brand, you have a personal brand, and if you own your own business or work for someone, that is also a brand. Some people don’t realize this, hence they don’t see the importance of building and managing a brand.

Have you ever heard bad things about a brand you enjoy, then changed your buying habits because of what you heard? These are problems that can have an impact on a business. This impact can be positive, but it can also be negative. It’s important to know that people’s perception of your brand is always correct. Your brand is whatever they say it is. So, what are they saying about your brand? Do you know? This perception is the life blood of everything you have and everything you do.

The danger in not recognizing your business as a brand is that if you don’t create a story, tell that story, and allow other people to become part of it, they will write their own version. That will ultimately become your brand. You have to know what your customers perceive as good and bad and why. This is not the place and time to guess. Do some research, ask some questions, create, get creative, and allow yourself to expand on what you already have.

If you already have a brand and it’s developed a negative perception, what do you do now?  Check back for next week’s post – we will be talking about how to change the perception of your brand. So, what’s the perception of your brand?
