Inbox Memories

Over this past holiday weekend, I decided I need to clean out some emails. It’s a simple and easy way to get refreshed and ready for a new year. I didn’t realize how far behind I’d gotten on cleaning up my inbox and emails. They were everywhere, unorganized, and needed badly to be cleaned up.
I didn’t realize how many emails I had. Between two different email accounts, I had well over 1,000 unorganized emails. That became a project that lasted more than I had wanted. While going through everything I had something unexpected happen. I found emails from my dad who passed way in May of 2010. I also found some emails from my good friend Jason, who helped me get the business off the ground when I launched it in the fall of 2009. It was nice to see emails from both of them. A nice experience of warm memories. I also found some from my wife. Pictures and funny random thoughts from her past job’s email address.
Apart from the warm memories of past emails, it got me thinking. The past two years have been very busy. Going back through these emails had me charting my progress with the business, places I’d gone, people I’ve met, opportunities, and projects. This was not the thing I expected in starting off a new year. It was, however, a very good place to begin. Looking at everything I’ve done was a good way to know where I want to go, and what I want to continue to do.
When was the last time you checked though your emails? Maybe there’s something there that will help you in 2012.
